Carbon Market

At the heart of downtown Cebu is the city’s largest and oldest market. Built by the abandoned railways, the Carbon Public Market is believed to be named after the Cebu Railroad’s coal depository. Offering a wide range and variety of products and services, the market is often crowded and has become a popular spot for tourists.

A hundred years old since 2009, the Carbon Public Market has become home to fresh goods, art, and street dwellers. And has become a reflection of the city’s culture and history.

The market is divided into three sections: the wet market, the fruit and vegetables section, and the goods and crafts section. Known for its quality and affordability, some companies source out their products from the Carbon market — allowing varying forms of livelihood to strive.

More than the wares and goods being sold, are the locals and vendors who brighten up the market. Their smiles amidst the fast-paced nature of Carbon market add color and invitation to the market’s clients.

Beyond the busy market setting lies the reality of the other residents of the Carbon market. Street dwellers have made their home in the sidewalks of the busy environment. Their presence in a place of fast-paced business and tourist spot is a vivid reminder of the gray past the market’s colors.
